On Monday 18th June, 48 golfers arrived at Richmond Golf Club for our annual golf day, which was sponsored by Capsticks. After a bacon sarnie and coffee to warm everyone up to brave the British summer, the teams of 4 headed out to the course for a shotgun start. This year Steve Rider, our Vice President, joined one of the teams to play the beautiful Richmond course in our Stableford competition.
The sight of the players and their buggies heading onto the course with our branded Mulligan balloons floating behind them was surreal! Resident Richmond Golf Pro, Steve Burridge hosted the Beat the Pro competition, and wasn’t beaten many times!
Thankfully, rain didn’t stop play and after their round, the teams headed back to the historic club house for a 3 course lunch followed by our popular golf day auction, with items including a 2 hour facial (donated by Cherry Woods Skin Clinic and three 4-Balls course passes (donated by Club Clean and by our generous hosts at Richmond).
Su Sayer OBE, our founder and CEO, gave an update on social care and how the current economy affects us. She also told a moving story of two people we support, including Luanne who with just a small amount of support from one of our employment teams realised her dream of securing a paid job.
After lunch, sports royalty Steve Rider held a Q&A session, which he peppered with a wealth of anecdotes from his glittering career in sports broadcasting. He closed with the comment “Lee Westwood could’ve done with some Mulligans for his recent rounds at the US Open!”
The day closed with Steve hosting the much anticipated prize giving ceremony – complete with Gary the Gnome as a consolation prize for the team that came in last place!
All in all, it was another hugely successful United Response golf day! Thank you to everyone who supported the day, including our sponsors and auction prize donors, to Steve Rider, and also to John Maguire, Steve Burridge and the Richmond Golf Club team! All together we managed to raise a fantastic £11,000 from the event!
Oh and one last thank you – to the British weather for turning what could have been a damp squib into a beautiful summer’s day!
