United Response is one of ten charities involved in this brand new sponsored cycling event, which takes part at Dunsfold Park on the famous Top Gear Track on Sunday 16th September.
Some of our cyclists explain why they are taking part in the first ever Surrey Supercycle.
Jaime, who cycled the famous Camino de Santiago de Compostela route in Spain last year, has already signed up to raise money for United Response. Jaime said:
“One of the best moments I had when cycling the Camino last year was the day that, by chance, I cycled part of the route with a large group of disabled people on adapted bikes. There was such enthusiasm among the group to be able to take part with everyone else, and when I heard about Surrey Supercycle I instantly thought it would be just as exciting.
“The fact that it will also raise money for United Response’s work in the Surrey area, where they are reaching out to disabled young people, means it will not only be fun but will make more inclusive events like this possible in the future.”
14 year old Simon has signed up to cycle with his Uncle Dan who we support at one of our services in Surrey. Simon is part of a cycle club in Twickenham and a member of British Cycling; the national governing body of the sport.
As a keen cyclist he is looking forward to riding on the Top Gear track and hopes to watch some of the Tour of Britain which is taking place nearby. When asked what inspired him to take part, Simon said:
“United Response have really helped Dan since he moved to the area, they’ve helped him in the house where he lives as well as to get work. Dan is always so busy now, so I’m really looking forward to being able to go on a cycle ride with him.”
Simon and Dan are hoping to cycle the full 5km Top Gear Track on a tandem. If you’d like to sponsor Simon and Dan visit: www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/edgington-wren
Our cyclists will be helping to raise money for the work we do across England and Wales and more specifically for a Garden Gnomes project in Surrey. The project provides the people we support with the opportunity to develop gardening skills which will consequently enhance their CV’s and possible future employment prospects.
If you’ve been inspired by Jaime and Simon’s stories why not join them?
