A house, a flat or a bungalow… Having options on the type of home you live in, and its location is important to all of us when choosing a place to call home; but for disabled people these choices are often limited. This is why housing has become an important subject for United Response and the people we support. Anthony’s story explains the importance of housing solutions for people with disabilities.
Anthony* was first supported by United Response in 2001. We helped him become more independent and really take control of his life. After a while he felt that he no longer needed day-to-day support from us.
He moved on, but stayed in touch with United Response. A few years later he approached us and asked for help in securing accommodation of his own. In the previous 18 months he had lived in 28 locations, understandably he found this unsettling. Because of this he wanted to find a place he could settle down in, for good.
Anthony decided that purchasing a home of his own was the right long term solution. While we had helped him figure out his options, Anthony initially approached another organisation to help him find an actual property.
However, although a property was selected, Anthony felt it was in the wrong location and decided not to proceed. Following this, Anthony approached United Response to act as his shared ownership partner and we agreed.
With our help, he looked at a number of properties and once he had found a place that he was happy with, we evaluated the opportunity together and decided that it was a good place to invest in.
With help from United Response, Anthony arranged a mortgage through an independent mortgage advisor and was able to purchase 59% of the property. It wasn’t long before he was ready to move in and start making the place feel like home.
Anthony’s mortgage is being paid by Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI) and his rent through housing benefit.
Anthony is very happy in his new home and has really made the place his own. It has given him more control and stability, so he can live life the way he chooses.
