You could be in for a treat on 26th October as our service in Wallsend hosts its very own Halloween party fundraiser!
For a £5 entrance ticket you’ll get a whole host of activities and entertainment, including a disco and costume competition. All money goes towards helping one service user, Laura, become more independent and realise her career aspirations.
“Laura has recently become an Avon representative and will be earning her own commission,” says service manager Nicola Hall. “Six months ago, staff used to manage all of her money, but since then, Laura has made huge progress and now manages her own personal weekly budget. Laura is now planning a future where she can have complete control of her savings.
“Presently, Laura is limited as to how much further she can progress by lack of access to a computer. If we can raise enough money to get her a laptop of her own, she can learn to put her Avon orders online herself and participate in their online training.
“Laura would also be able to manage her personal finances and could research what’s going on in the area, increasing her community involvement.
“She’s achieved some amazing things in the last few months. In a volunteer role she educates staff at the local medical centre around how best to support people with learning disabilities. This has helped tremendously with her self-confidence, as well as increasing her community connections.
“Laura has also set herself the goal of learning to drive and recognises that her earnings from Avon can help her achieve this. She’s looking at computer courses in her area and sees that a greater knowledge of technology will help her in all areas of her life.”
The Halloween party will take place from 7pm until 11pm at Kings Street Social Club in North Shields, North Tyneside.
Highlights include: a raffle, disco, games, buffet and a prize for the best costume. Tickets cost £5, with free admission for children.
