Sensory gardens appeal

We have launched an appeal to raise funds to build 10 sensory gardens across England and Wales. We need your help.

Many people United Response supports have spent a large part of their lives living in big institutions, with little or no stimulation. Sensory gardens mean that they can interact and engage with their environment through sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. This can transform their quality of life.

The appeal has the backing of many people including pop star and horticulturalist Kim Wilde and garden designer, writer and TV presenter Ann-Maire Powell

Kim Wilde says:

"It's an important cause, aiming to raise money for sensory gardens which are proven to stimulate the senses of people with learning disabilities and bring new colour and energy into their lives. That's why I'm proud to be involved."

TV's Ann-Marie Powell says:

"Gardens are creative spaces and that is why they can bring so many benefits for people with complex learning disabilities - many of whom may not communicate verbally. The use of colours, textures, smells and sounds can really help to stimulate the senses and help people to engage with their surroundings in a whole new way.

For people to be able to relax and really enjoy their garden, it is important that the space reflects their personality. In the same way, each of the United Response gardens will be built around the needs of the people who will be using them and with their input."
