Press Release

22nd December 2006

Winners of the 'Yorkshire's Favourite Christmas Recipe' are announced!

Marjorie Layfield from Stockton Lane, Barbara Pettitt from Navigation Road and Yvonne Stead from Ampleforth are all winners of the 'Yorkshire's Favourite Christmas Recipe' competition ran by the charity United Response in partnership with The Press.

The three women who sent in recipes for a favourite family Christmas cake, a wickedly delicious coffee, walnut and meringue pie and mouth watering mince pies with crumble topping will receive a free lunch for two at Krumbs café in Tanners Row in the New Year.

Run by United Response, Krumbs creates opportunities for people with learning disabilities in York, to gain the skills and experience they need to get a job in the catering and hospitality industries.

With the help of The Press, United Response is also running a Christmas Appeal to try and raise the money needed to buy an Electronic Point of Sale (EPOS) system for the café. Some people with learning difficulties find writing difficult. This handheld piece of equipment will have pictures of everything on the Krumbs menu and will mean that students can take down orders at the touch of a button.

Competition winner, Marjorie Layfield was inspired to send in her popular favourite Christmas cake recipe after reading about the Krumbs Christmas Appeal in The Press. She said:

"I wanted to enter the competition to give Krumbs students a bit of encouragement. I think the café is a great idea and I really hope they raise the money they need for the EPOS system. Helping people with learning disabilities to become more confident is really important."

"My recipe was given to me by an old friend 20 years ago. It's very popular and I still get requests for it from friends and family every Christmas.

"It's a very easy Christmas cake to make. The fruit never sinks to the bottom and it always comes out a nice golden colour.

"My husband and I really like eating out, so we will certainly enjoy our lunch at Krumbs!"

Barbara Pettitt's Old Farm Christmas Cake recipe appeared in The Press last week. But it was actually a different dish, her very own coffee, walnut and meringue pie which won her a free lunch at Krumbs.

Barbara said:

"It’s brilliant news. I'm really pleased that everyone at Krumbs liked my recipe. Going to the café  in the New Year will be a real treat."

Diane Lightfoot heads up United Response's supported employment work. She said:

"We would like to thank everyone who sent in their favourite recipes and congratulate the three winners. We received some great entries. There are obviously some very talented chefs in York!

"We've also had a fantastic response to the appeal so far and would like to thank everyone who has given so generously. But there is still along way to go, so please keep sending in your donations. It would be great to celebrate the start of 2007 with a new EPOS system for Krumbs."

To find out more about the Krumbs Christmas Appeal and how you can donate, please go to the How to help page on the website, or alternatively you can make a donation in person at Krumbs café in Tanners Row, York.
