Ivan's story: Ivan is reunited with his sister

A young man

Ivan is 26 years old. He has learning disabilities. He is supported by United Response in Derby.

A calendar that says "17 years"

In January, Ivan met his sister Zena, for the first time in 17 years.

A man talking

Ivan’s support worker is called Daniel Nyoka. He says:"I have supported Ivan for four years – he is a jolly and confident character."

An older woman

Ivan's grandma lives in Jamaica. She visits here every year. Daniel supports Ivan to see his grandma when she visits. They have a good relationship.

A letter with a photo of a woman

Last time she visited, Ivan's grandma had a surprise for him! She gave him details of how to contact his sister Zena.

Two people sat at a table

Zena knew about Ivan from Ivan's grandma. But Ivan and Zena had not seen each other since Ivan was 8 years old.

Thumbs up

Daniel says, "We were really pleased about Ivan seeing his sister."

A photo album

Daniel says, "Ivan is non-verbal, we showed him old photos of his family. We talked about his sister to see how he reacted. When he became excited we knew he would want to see her."

A woiman on the phone

Daniel got in touch with Zena. They agreed to support Ivan to visit her at her home in Nottingham. "We didn’t know what to expect," Daniel says , "But Zena was keen to find out about his life."

Two people holding hands

Normally, Ivan is shy around strangers. But this time, he sat next to Zena and held her hand.

Some papers

Ivan’s sister has agreed to have a more active role in Ivan's life.

A menu

They met up a second time. This time they shared a meal in a hotel near where Zena lives.

A baby smiling

Zena brought her young son to meet Ivan. He liked his uncle.

An excited person

Daniel hopes the future will be good too. He says, "I am so pleased for Ivan now. He has his sister back in his life. I’m sure it will be positive for everyone."
