Darren' story

Darren is 32 and works with UR Consultants in Trafford.

Darren has helped local businesses make their communications more accessible to people with learning disabilities.

Darren has been on a placement with UR Consultants for several months and has good experience.

Darren is now much more confident and as he has learnt the importance of working as part of a team.

UR Consultants is a social enterprise made up of people with learning disabilities.

The consultants work with businesses to make sure their documents are "accessible", and that they are easy to read and understand.

UR Consultants was launched in April 2006.

Darren says: "I am part of a core team of people. We discuss things as a group."

"People ask my opinion about how accessible I think a document is and listen to what I say"

"I like working in a team. I get to do lots of different things. I work on the computer and choose pictures to go in the documents."

"I get to meet lots of new people when we are training."

"We can wear what we want but have to look smart. I’m more confident now."

Darren helped the Job Centre Plus to write accessible letters to people with learning disabilities who were looking for work.

Darren has now finished his placement and received his first pay cheque from United Response last November.

Darren won’t be spending his money.

He said: "I will save all my money. Put it in my bank account!"
