It can be easy to take for granted the choice and control we have in our lives. However, for some people with learning disabilities additional support is needed to live independently.
United Response’s Assisting Independence appeal is fundraising to provide specialist ‘assistive technology’ for people with learning disabilities. Such technology can have a really positive impact on people’s sense of dignity, by enabling them to live more independently in their own homes.
Assistive technology comes in many different shapes and levels of complexity, from a medicine dispenser with an alarm to tell you when to take your pills, to a thumb print key locking system for people who lose their house keys from time to time.
Support the appeal
A fairly modest donation could make a huge difference to someone’s life.
Portable doorbells with loud chime sounds and flashing lights to help people with visual impairments and deafness. £44.28 to £46.51
Automatic hard floor cleaner that senses obstacles in its way, making it easy for those with reduced mobility to clean floors. £160
Smoke Alarms designed for the deaf and hard of hearing. The main base unit is placed by the bed and a vibrating pad is placed under the pillow. On detecting a fire, a strobe light flashes on the base and the under pillow pad vibrates. £114.99 to £166.74
Epilepsy sensor that monitors the user’s vital signs including heart rate and breathing patterns to detect a range of epileptic seizures. Eliminates the need for carers to make physical checks, promoting independence and dignity. £280
Automatic fall detector which raises an alert to the monitoring centre or designated carer. £85
