London Marathon runner interview – Geoff Brown

Geoff tells us about his fantastic Marathon experience, running for United Response.

We still have places left in this year’s Marathon!

1. Why did you choose to run for United Response?

I happened to know someone who works for United Response, but also because I know what great work they do enabling people with disabilities to lead independent lives.

2. Did you receive good fundraising support from United Response?

It was superb – I received lots of contact and ideas from the fundraising team. Also, a member of staff from a local United Response service came to my office to talk to my colleagues about the work that the charity does.

3. What would you say to somebody that wants to do the marathon, but finds it a daunting prospect?

First, I would say the size and scale of the event shouldn’t put anyone off. It’s all brilliantly organised and they look after the runners really well. All you have to do is turn up and run.

Second, the support from both fellow runners and the crowd is legendary and certainly keeps you going when the run gets hard.

Third, the run DOES get hard. For all the training you do (and I did a lot!) you can’t underestimate how tough those last six miles are. But that’s the challenge. If it was easy, anyone could do it.

Finally the post-race reception that United Response organise for runners is brilliant – especially the massage! Without that I might never have made it home!

4. Would you run the London Marathon for United Response again?

I’m not running in 2012 to let my sponsors from last year have breathing space. However, I might be back in 2013, and if I am I would definitely consider United Response again!

Remember, if you want to run for United response in the London Marathon:
