A big thank you to all those of you who entered our Bringing Back the Bloom competition. The standard of entries was very high and we are pleased to announce Jennifer Clifton, from Folkestone, as our national winner.
Jennifer’s winning entry is below. Jennifer will receive £100 in garden centre vouchers and her poem will form part of the community garden that United Response is creating in Kent.
Round My Garden by Jennifer Clifton
Every day what ever the weather
I tender my piece of earth
And watch in awe as each season
Brings plants to new re-birth.
In spring there were the bulbs
With red and pinks and purple
And every shade of blue
If you took the time to firkle.
Then came the back breaking work
With digging, planting sowing
And the battle with the weeds
And constant hoeing, hoeing, hoeing.
You turn your back and the cabbage white
Has turned your greens to lace
So out you go with soapy water
To rid them with great haste.
The hard work really pays off
With new potatoes carrots and beans
Beetroot courgettes and onions
And thankfully the greens.
The butterflies birds and bees
Are having a wonderful time
While the washing is blowing in the breeze
Out on the garden line.
I thank you Lord for this wonderful world
And the joy my garden brings
As I sit and listen in the evening sun
As the blackbird sings and sings.
