Darren's Story

Darren has played a vital role in helping local businesses make their communications more accessible to people with disabilities in Trafford.

Aged 32, Darren, gained valuable work experience on a placement with UR Consultants for seven months. His confidence has since soared as he’s learnt the importance of working as a team.

UR Consultants is a social enterprise made up of people with learning disabilities. The consultants work with businesses to make sure their documents are "accessible", easy to read, understandable and jargon-free. Darren has been in his role since UR Consultants was launched in April 2006.

Darren says:

"I am part of a core team of people. We discuss things as a group. People ask my opinion about how accessible I think a document is and listen to what I say"

"I like working in a team. I get to do lots of different things. I work on the computer and choose pictures to go in the documents."

"I get to meet lots of new people when we are training. We can wear what we want but have to look smart. I’m more confident now."

Darren has recently helped the Job Centre Plus to write accessible letters to people with learning disabilities who were looking for work. 

He is now at the end of his placement and received his first pay cheque from UR Consultants last November.

He said: "I will save all my money. Put it in my bank account!"
