Complex physical support needs

Some of the people United Response works with have complex physical support needs in addition to their learning disability. We also support people whose primary impairment is a physical disability.

We support many people who have physical disabilities – a survey of all the people we support in 2006 showed that 37% had a physical disability and 37% had a hearing and/or visual impairment. This includes people who have a learning disability and associated physical disabilities and those who have a physical disability as their sole diagnosis.

We support people with a range of physical disabilities, from mild physical disabilities – for example, impaired motor skills – to profound and complex physical disabilities.

Whatever the level of someone’s disability, we provide tailored support using techniques such as person-centred active support and intensive interaction to enable people to engage as far as possible with all aspects of their life. In this way we hope to build confidence and independence.
