Person-centred Active Support

United Response is a pioneer in Person-centred Active Support, having implemented it across the organisation for the past nine years.

Person-centred Active Support is a way of helping people with learning disabilities to engage in meaningful activity and relationships as active participants.

About Person-centred Active Support

Person-centred Active Support is about providing enough support to enable people to participate in activities and relationships, gain more control and more independence.

It is based on using ordinary every day activities to encourage choice and engagement, and to increase independence.

Instead of doing things for people or to people, Person-centred Active Support involves working with people so they can take part in all the activities of everyday life, no matter how disabled they are.

At United Response, we have developed our skills in working with people and supporting them in every day activities in a meaningful way.

Person-centred Active Support and engagement

There is a strong evidence base to show the correlation between Person-centred Active Support and increases in engagement.

For Person-centred Active Support to be a success, people must repeatedly be presented with small opportunities to take part in activities. At the same time, they must be provided with the necessary support to ensure the experience is a positive one.

Research carried out by Mansell (1994) and Hatton et al (1996) shows that Person-centred Active Support can be particularly beneficial to people with complex needs.
