United Response started a photography project in 2005 called “Mental Wealth”, in partnership with the award-winning charity PhotoVoice.
About the project
The idea of the project was to work with people to give them the skills they needed to use photography as a creative medium. The aim was to produce a set of images to communicate the reality of daily life from the perspective of a person with mental health needs.
The project produced a breath-taking wealth of images and testimonies. These show people’s individual hopes, fears and achievements and are a compelling backdrop to current developments in mental health legislation.

UR in the Picture
Although Mental Wealth was conceived as an awareness raising project, we soon realised that the project potentially had other benefits, in terms of increasing the confidence and self-esteem of participants.
To build on this work, we have now developed ‘UR in the Picture’ to document and formally explore the wider benefits of photography in terms of people’s confidence and self-esteem.
Funded by charitable trusts and foundations, ‘UR in the Picture’ has resulted in the creation of an enormous body of work from 28 photographers with mental health needs.
The results will be showcased at a special exhibition running from 7th -11th July 2009 at the Bankside Gallery in London.
