Skills4 Action provides structured pre-work training and work experience opportunities for people with learning disabilities or mental health needs.
Aims of the project
Skills4Action combines individual learning and skills development alongside group activities in the local community.
The project aims to provide work experience for all people, regardless of their level of disability. It is unusual in that it aims to provide meaningful work experience of people with the most profound disabilities.
It is particularly suited to young people pre–transition, who may benefit from the development of the soft skills required for successful employment.
The project aims to offer “first-rung” training and work experience, giving people educational and volunteering opportunities, and enabling them to move on to further work experience or progress towards employment.
In doing so it also offers support to older people in the community. The Skills4Action team carry out tasks like as gardening, decorating and household jobs so that older people can continue to live in their own homes, living independently for longer, possibly reducing any sense of isolation.
The project aims to challenge the perception of people with learning disabilities and mental health needs. Many people consider these groups to be always receiving services rather than delivering them. This project empowers them to do that.
