National disability charity United Response is set to make a big splash with its first ever inclusive charity swimathon in the Midlands. In the Swim Midlands 2013 will take place at Victoria Park Leisure Centre, Manners Road, Ilkeston, Derbyshire on 31 August.

The unique swimathon is open to both disabled and able-bodied swimmers and is the charity’s first inclusive swimathon in the Midlands. But with the closing date of 23 August fast looming the charity is calling upon budding swimmers to sign up and enter via the charity’s website.

The competition is the brainchild of a lady supported by United Response who wanted to participate in a swimathon which would include both disabled and able-bodied swimmers. As a result, the charity hosted its first inclusive swimathon last year in London. The success of last year’s event highlighted demand for inclusive competitions and has led to the charity hosting its first inclusive competition in the Midlands.

Lynda Burchnell-Stapleton, who is helping to manage the event, said: “As a service manager for United Response I have seen many amazing things over the years. However, helping organise an inclusive swimathon is one of my biggest achievements. This is a great opportunity to show off your swimming skills in this unique competition and help raise vital funds for the charity. All ability’s and ages are welcome to have a bash, so sign up today and join us on the 31 August. But remember, spaces are limited so sign up before it’s too late.”

The event will take place in the country’s only sensory swimming pool in which warm water, lights and sounds create a therapeutic sensory experience. This gives people with severe learning disabilities a fun sensory experience.

Entrants will also be able to tuck into a free buffet lunch at the post reception event and unwind with fellow contestants. In addition, swimmers will receive a free United Response T-shirt and a medal to thank them for their support.

Participants will have the opportunity raise money for United Response, a national charity which supports people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and physical disabilities across England and Wales.

In the Swim Midlands is part of United Response’s 40th anniversary celebrations which are being held across the country this year. However, the charity wanted to hold a special celebration in the Midlands with an inclusive swimathon the local area would remember.
