A teacher from Timberland, Lincolnshire, is taking on the London Marathon on 24 April to raise money for United Response, a national charity which supports people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health needs.

Teresa Milnes, 49, has worked at Kesteven and Sleaford High School Selective Academy for 15 years.

Teresa said:

“Over the years I have seen our students study, live and work all over the world. Their excellent GCSE and A-Level results are their passports into higher education, apprenticeships or jobs. I know, however, that there are many young people who may not have that assurance, through no fault of their own.”

She was inspired to run for United Response, because of the work the charity does in supporting young adults with learning disabilities.

“What struck me about United Response is the emphasis they place on the importance of everyone having a place in their community, and the opportunity to contribute to society. The charity provides support for diverse aspects of everyday life, from using public transport to managing finances, and finding employment,” Teresa said.

“Running the marathon and raising £1,500 for United Response is my way of helping, in a small way, young adults for whom qualifications are hard to reach.”

Teresa has come up with a number of creative ways to meet her fundraising target – including auctioning her artwork, selling homemade soup, bread and flapjacks at work and securing a pledge from S&A Floral Design.

“My colleagues’ enthusiasm for "Soup Wednesdays" has been outstanding! The recent introduction of "Flapjack Friday" has been equally as popular,” said Teresa.
