Two support workers are holding a fundraising event at The Steamer pub in Welwyn in a bid to raise money for a national disability charity ahead of the London Marathon.

Deputy service manager at United Response’s Gombards service Nikki Cowen, and support worker George Newman, are taking part in the Marathon in April on behalf of United Response, and are holding a quiz night at the pub on Saturday 28th February.

Starting at 7pm, the free event will see the pair selling raffle tickets and auctioning prizes as well as holding a quiz, while local funk soul band Essential Motion will be playing live music from 9pm.

Raffle prizes include a trip to Jungle Mania from Gosling Park, a meal for two at Chieftains in Welwyn Garden City, a photo shoot donated by Studio 57 and a host of offers from local retailers.

Nikki said: “We have had lots of support from local businesses and from those in the village which has been brilliant. We hope that people come along on the night to enjoy themselves and help raise funds for the charity.”

The duo will be pleased to take a break from training, which has seen Nikki manage 14 mile runs in preparation, while George has overcome knee pain in recent weeks as training intensifies.

Now on the mend, both recently took part in the Love Welwyn 10k run, clocking up good times that have encouraged them ahead of a half-marathon on 22nd March.

United Response runs the local care home supporting adults with severe and complex needs, and Nikki and George, who both work at the service, have committed to raising £1,500 for the charity in order to enhance the lives of the people supported by the charity.

Nikki said: “Training has been superb and the local community have been really supportive so far, recognising us when we run in our 118 costumes.

“We want to raise as much as we can to spur us on ahead of the big day and we thought a night out at the local was the perfect way to connect with neighbours and have some fun.”

Entering the quiz costs £2.20 per person with a maximum of five people per team. Winners will receive a free round of drinks from the bar.
