Winston Matthews has supported United Response for a number of years, taking part in challenge events to raise money for our work to continue.

Running a busy restaurant in the centre of London would be more than enough for some people, but for Winston Matthews from Colnbrook in Berkshire, he juggles the demands of work with fundraising through challenge events for United Response.

The seasoned athlete took part in this year’s Prudential RideLondon–Surrey 100 with his partner Anna, raising much needed funds for our work. This latest challenge follows his success at the London Marathon in April, the ninth year that he has participated in the epic event and his third year raising money for us.

Commenting on the motivation behind his work for United Response, Winston said:

“Fundraising for United Response really appeals to me. There are many charities that look after the very young and old, but very few that support people in between. I was particularly interested in the support that the charity provides for young disabled adults looking for work.”

Winston, 48, fits his training for the variety of events around his new role as general manager of the busy Kettners restaurant in Soho.

As a trained chef, Winston is particularly interested in how food can be used to stimulate the senses; particularly for people with sensory impairments. As such, he has held a tasting sessions for people supported by United Response, attending our services in Hampton for a fundraising taste test. He has even held a barbecue for people we support in the Teddington area and invited his new-found friends from the service to his restaurant for lunch.

He explained: “The great thing about food is you only need one of five sense to get some kind of enjoyment from it.

“I have found that getting people involved in the making of dishes helps to breakdown pre-conceived ideas about food and helps them enjoy it more.”
