Leaving a gift in your will can really help us to create a better future for the people we support.

Whether you are able to give a little or a lot, a gift in your will can make a huge difference in enabling us to fund projects that transform people’s lives – whether this is buying technology to help someone communicate, or live independently, supporting someone to get a job, as you can see in the video above.

Your support could also help us to set up a community group to provide a lifeline to vulnerable people, or provide seed corn funding for a disabled person to set up their own enterprise.

How can you leave a gift?

There are three different ways of leaving a gift to United Response in your will.

  • A share/whole of your estate – this is called a 'residuary legacy'
  • A sum of money – this is called a 'pecuniary legacy'
  • A particular item – this is called a 'specific legacy'

You can also choose to make a gift that will take effect subject to a prior wish, such as providing for your partner until their death, after which time the gift reverts to United Response. This is called a 'reversionary legacy'.

What kind of wording could you use in your will?

The wording you use in your will is important. We recommend that you use a qualified solicitor to draw up your will. They will know how best to word your legacy, but we think the following information will also be useful to you.

I give to United Response (registered charity number 265249) of Highland House, 165 Broadway, Wimbledon SW19 1NE:

  • X% share of my residuary estate (insert percentage)
  • my residuary estate
  • free of tax the sum of £X (state in figures and words)
  • free of tax the specific gift of (insert gift)

and I express the wish that this be applied for the charitable purposes of United Response and I further direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other authorised officer of United Response for the time being shall be a full discharge to my Executors for bequest/payment of such legacy.
