Responding to a statement from Sajid Javid, the Minister for Communities and Local Government, on the Provisional Local Government Settlement on 19th December, chief executive of United Response, Tim Cooper, said:

"Following a Budget which did not even mention social care, the absence of badly needed central government investment from the settlement for local authorities is short-sighted in the extreme.

"Government has yet again paid lip service to a threat of national proportions by allowing cash-strapped councils some flexibility to raise local taxes. Funding to be gained from this is a drop in the ocean of capital investment desperately needed for social care, and for increased wage costs of hardworking care staff which continue to rise without being met by Government. This Government’s arithmetic on social care, simply does not add-up."
