Getting up to speed at BMW

Supported internships are designed to help young people step confidently into the world of employment, with tailored support from a job coach that helps them grow their own independence over time.
For ROC College student Cameron, his internship at the BMW Vertu workshop in Exeter has given him the chance to explore his long-standing passion for cars, particularly luxury German models, while gaining real, hands-on experience in a busy workplace. It has also been a great opportunity to build skills and confidence in an environment that genuinely interests him.

Working within the spare parts department at BMW, he’s developed a wide range of employability skills. This includes strengthening his interpersonal communication with colleagues, using online ordering and returns systems, and putting his functional Maths and English skills into practice.
“I do the most important job here,” Cameron says. “If the team are fixing a car and don’t have a part, they can’t do the job. So, my role is crucial.”
He’s also been able to learn valuable practical skills such as using computer spreadsheets, stock-taking and making spare parts returns, workplace safety, and using Personal Protective Equipment.
Cameron’s Job Coach, Maria, explains: “Cameron is learning a wide range of transferable and job-specific skills that will help him when he is actively ready to seek employment. Time keeping, communication, and adapting to change are just some of the areas in which Cameron has gained first-hand knowledge.”
But one of the things Cameron likes most is being part of a workplace that encourages him to grow.
“I enjoy working in a team that has supported my development in communication skills,” he says. “And it’s been fun being surrounded by so many nice cars.”
A job that fits just right
Finding a placement built around his love of cars has made a huge difference to Cameron’s wellbeing — thanks to the support of United Response’s Supported Employment team.
For Cameron, the internship isn’t just about gaining work experience. It’s a chance to do something he genuinely enjoys and feel part of a professional team. He arrives on time each day, proudly wearing his BMW uniform and ready to get stuck in.
Lee Jones, Stores Supervisor at BMW Vertu Exeter, told us: “Cameron is a pleasure to be around. He always has a smile on his face, and he is a great member of the team.”
As a confident and communicative person, Cameron has no problem tackling new experiences with enthusiasm and is currently building skills to complete more tasks on his own – something he’s hoping to fully master by the end of next term. He’s recently been given a major project to complete by Mike, the store’s new manager: a whole store stocktake, which he’s looking forward to.
Now growing in self-assuredness, Cameron is already looking ahead to the future. He’s developed his CV and even written a speculative application to Porsche, hoping to pursue a career within the automotive sector.
With his eagerness to succeed, newfound independence, and clear passion for the role, Cameron’s journey at BMW Vertu shows just how much of a difference the right opportunity can make.
Supported Employment pathways
A key part of our work at United Response is to support people into meaningful, paid employment, and help them build real-life skills and confidence along the way.
One of the ways we’re doing this is through the Connect to Work programme, delivered in partnership with local organisations and employers in Devon to create more accessible job opportunities.
