Do You Hear Me? A Learning Disability Week blog

My name is Liv, I have been interested in music since I was 4 and have been writing and performing my own music for the last 18 months. I’ve done a few pub gigs and this summer in July, I’m performing at Yorkshire Lavender and a local music festival at Woodthorpe in York. Most of my inspiration for songs comes from life experiences, and experiences with friends and family.
United Response has helped to open wider pathways for my music, giving me opportunities to have my music heard by a wider audience. I’ve been taught how to produce a song and the skills to be able to write and structure my own songs. I am writing a song for the Our Life Stories project. I took inspiration from a song called ‘The Climb’ by Miley Cyrus which helped spark creativity. I looked at the brief carefully and made sure I included all the contributions. This part was really important because the song was created to represent all the people at United Response and to give to an insight to their life stories.
It has felt like a privilege to be creating a song for the project. I found it very healing, as some of these stories are very similar to my own. It’s helped me to recognise how far I’ve come and to turn some of the negative experiences into something really positive through creating the song. I found being interviewed for Our Life Stories a really positive experience and I’d definitely recommend it to others.
