Our Chair of Trustees says a fond farewell

After eight years of dedicated service, Malcolm McCaig will step down as Chair of the United Response Board in October 2026.
During his tenure, Malcolm has guided the organisation through significant challenge and change, including the global pandemic and a demanding financial environment. Under his leadership, governance has been strengthened, a focused national structure established, and a new strategy developed that positions United Response for sustainable growth.
Reflecting on his decision, Malcolm said:
“After much reflection, I have decided that this is the right time for me to step back from my role as Chair. It has been a tremendous privilege to serve as Chair of United Response for the past eight years.”
He added that despite navigating “intense challenges including a global pandemic and a challenging financial environment,” we have “emerged a stronger, more unified organisation that is ambitious for the future.”
Paying tribute to his contribution, CEO Kate Terroni said:
“We are deeply grateful to Malcolm for the leadership and dedication he has brought to United Response over the past eight years. His calm stewardship, strategic clarity and unwavering commitment to the people we support have shaped the organisation we are today.”
She added that while his guidance will be missed, he leaves the charity “in a strong, confident position as we prepare for the next chapter of our work.”
Malcolm’s commitment to listening to the people we support has also been recognised by the People’s Forum. Ted Wade, Chair of the People’s Forum, said:
“On behalf of the People’s Forum, I want to thank Malcolm for always listening to and valuing the voices of people with lived experience. He has made sure our views were heard at the highest level of the organisation and that has made a real difference.”
What happens next?
The recruitment of a new Chair is being led by Vice Chairs Guy Van Dichele and Joe Anichebe supported by the people we support.
Malcolm will remain in post until October 2026 to ensure continuity and a smooth transition.
Malcolm leaves United Response as a stable, well-governed and future-focused organisation, with a clear strategy centred on growth. We thank him for his outstanding contribution and look ahead with confidence.
