Helping others find the ‘Keys to Success’

Sameena recognised that many individuals seeking work struggled with low self-worth, which impacted both their job prospects and everyday wellbeing. As a trained facilitator in the GOALS programme (Gaining Opportunities And Living Skills), and with her manager’s backing, she began using the programme’s resources to help people build confidence and take charge of their lives. She shared:
In just a few sessions I saw a shift in mindset and confidence. The people I supported were making decisions and taking action.
Inspired by the results of the initial pilot, Sameena expanded the programme to reach more people, tailoring it into a structured 6-week series for small groups.
Together, Sameena and Omar guided a group of 7 participants through a curriculum designed to foster growth, reflection and action. Each week focused on a distinct theme:
- Developing self-esteem and personal responsibility
- Practicing positive self-talk
- Recognising and affirming individual strengths
- Defining personal vision and values
- Exploring personal success
- Understanding job markets, networking, and crafting strong CVs
Kevin, one of the programme’s graduates, said:
In the past, because I have had health issues, I have lacked a bit of confidence. But now I am really happy with where I am going with my life and I have a lot to thank Sameena for – she has made a massive difference to my life.
In addition to earning certificates for their participation, the group achieved something even more significant:
- 4 people secured paid employment;
- 2 started voluntary placements; and
- 1 began further training.
Kevin’s journey didn’t stop there. He excitedly shared:
I am actually going to be going into tutoring the course part time at Bradford Royal Infirmary. It will be teaching people like me who have disabilities and I will be passing on what I have learnt from Sameena in the group. I’ll be talking in front of a group which is a bit nerve-wracking for anybody but I am really looking forward to it. It’s a fantastic opportunity.
This transformational programme continues to run in Bradford, with the hope that it will expand to other regions in the future, bringing the same empowering results to even more individuals.
Kevin adds:
I’d definitely recommend this course to other people – especially people who haven’t got as much confidence in putting themselves forward. When I came out of hospital I had such a rough time – I needed a goal to aim for. And now I have more confidence, the tutoring role and hopefully it can lead to other paid work and maybe even a new career!
