Easy News: Andy Burnham is the new Prime Minister

   On Monday 20th July 2026 Andy Burnham officially replaced Keir Starmer.

   Labour Party members voted for Andy Burnham to be the new Party leader.

   Keir Starmer said he was going to resign on 22 June 2026.

4. 

   He stayed in his job while someone new was chosen.

   Before leaving 10 Downing Street he made a speech.

   He said he wishes Andy Burnham the best.

   And that he supports him.

   He thanked his family and everyone who works for the government.

   He also thanked the public for the opportunity.

    He said he is proud of everything he has achieved.

    This made his resignation official.

    This made his new job as Prime Minister official.

    And that there have been too many changes to Prime Ministers in recent years.

    He said the government will announce cost of living plans on 21st July.

    And that a 10-year plan will be published later in the year.

    He has said his first job is to help end rough sleeping.

    This means helping people who sleep on the street to have homes.

    Andy Burnham used to be the Mayor for Manchester.

22. 

    He was recently elected to be an MP.

23. 

    This meant he could apply to be the new leader for the Labour Party and Prime Minister.
