    1. Kier Starmer has decided not to be the Prime Minister anymore. This is called resigning.

    2. He gave a speech on Monday 22 June.

    3. He said he is not the right person to lead the United Kingdom in the next General Election.

    4. A General Election is when people from the United Kingdom get to vote on who runs the country.

    5. The next General Election must be by August 2029 but there can be one sooner.

    6. He will continue to be Prime Minister until someone else is chosen to take his place.

    7. In the last General Election, the Labour party were voted in to run the country.

    8. Because Kier Starmer was leader of the Labour Party, he became the Prime Minister.

    9. Now he has resigned, members of the Labour party will vote to choose who they want to be the new Leader of the Labour Party.

    10. The person they choose will be the new Prime Minister.

    11. There isn’t an official timetable for a new leader but Sir Keir will ask for nominations for a new leader in July

    12. Nominations are choices made by people for who could be the next leader. Contenders to be the new leader have to be nominated by 81 Labour MPs to stand.

    13. Former Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham has confirmed he will be putting himself forward.

    14. More Labour MP’s may also put themselves forward.
